"Discourage litigation. Persuade your neighbors to compromise whenever you can. Point out to them how the nominal winner is often a real loser -- in fees, expenses and waste of time. As a peacemaker, the lawyer has a superior opportunity of being a good man. There will still be business enough." - Abraham Lincoln
That advice is as good now as it was then. Unfortunately, sometimes litigation is necessary, and when you find yourself in need of a lawyer, you need someone who will take on your fight as though it were his own. That fight must not be an end in itself, but a means towards justice. When Paul ran for District Judge, he had the support of Republicans, Democrats and Independent groups, because they knew his reputation for hard work and his dedication to the law and to justice.
Today, Paul represents a wide array of clients, both plaintiffs and defendants, in all aspects of civil litigation and civil appellate cases, but his practice primarily focuses on consumer protection and commercial disputes. Before co-founding Simon Herbert McClelland & Stiles, LLP in 2005, Paul practiced law at the Texas-based law firm of Winstead Sechrest & Minick in the Houston office of its Litigation/Dispute Resolution and Appellate sections. While there, he worked primarily on complex financial matters in cases all across the United States, and he also co-authored an appellate brief which established new law in Texas: a sophisticated business or individual can agree to waive its right to a jury trial before a dispute arises.
Immediately after law school, Paul clerked for Leslie Brock Yates, the Senior Associate Justice on the Fourteenth Court of Appeals. Paul earned his law degree from South Texas College of Law, where he was on the Dean's List, an Assistant Articles' Editor of the Law Review, a member of The Order of the Lytae (for academic excellence), a member of The Order of Barristers, and a member of three of South Texas's legendary moot court teams. Paul graduated with honors from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science.
Paul is licensed to practice law in all state courts in Texas, as well as the Southern, Northern, and Western Districts of Texas federal courts, and he has represented clients in courts across the United States. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the Houston Bar Association, a Fellow with the Houston Bar Foundation, and a member of the Texas Trial Lawyers Association, an organization that fights for the rights of all Texans to have their day in court.
Paul is married to Robin, and they have two Labrador Retrievers, Hicks and Bear, both of whom were rescued. Robin and Paul are active in their community, with Robin having served as President of Baylor Research Advocates for Student Scientists ("BRASS"), a charitable organization that has donated more than $600,000 [as of 2010] in scholarships to students attending Baylor Medical School in Houston, and Paul having served as Chairman of the Scholar Selection Committee, the committee that awards the academic scholarships.
Paul has authored or co-authored a number of articles that have appeared in legal and business journals, as well as local newspapers, including:
